A Conversation with Greg Mahony

This month, we’re turning the spotlight on a member of our sales team, Greg Mahony. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Greg traded snow for sunshine and joined our team in 2023.  Based in Bucerias, Nayarit, Greg is helping Canadians and international buyers find their dream homes, and their dream lives, here in Mexico.

Q: Greg, what first brought you to Mexico’s Bay of Banderas?

A: I came here initially for the lifestyle, the warm weather, vibrant culture, and welcoming community. My brother JP moved here 21 years ago and after visiting him and spending time in the region, I realized what a truly special place it is. Many people from Canada and abroad were looking for the same thing I’d found. That’s what inspired me to plant roots here.

Q: What inspired you to join JPM and work in real estate?
A: After 30+ years of working in the hospitality industry, I was looking for a new career opportunity and I wanted to be a part of a company that went beyond just buying and selling properties. JP was expanding his brokerage, and the timing was perfect. For me, it’s about guiding people through the whole process, not just signing on the dotted line.

Q: How is your approach different for international buyers?
A: We make it simple and transparent. Our team helps clients understand the local market, navigate the legal process, tax and immigration advice and ensuring my clients feel confident every step of the way. We also share insider tips about living here, from the best local restaurants to hidden beaches, so clients feel at home even before they move.

Q: What do you personally love most about the Bay of Banderas?
A: The mix of natural beauty and the cultural experiences. Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is one of our favorite celebrations. It’s such a beautiful tradition. My wife Lisa and I live in a vibrant town called Bucerias and it’s a place where you can work, play, and truly live your best life. Just incredible energy.

Q: Any favorite client success stories?
A: One that stands out is a woman from Vancouver who dreamed of owning of home near the beach. We helped her find a condo with incredible ocean views and connected her with locals who share her passions, mainly Pickleball! 

Q: What trends are you seeing in the market right now?
A: More buyers are seeking investment properties that double as vacation homes, particularly in walkable neighborhoods with strong rental demand. The Bay of Banderas is an excellent market to explore right now, it’s firmly a buyer’s market, with fantastic properties available at highly attractive price points.

Q: And when you’re not working, what’s your favorite way to enjoy life here?
A: Defintely playing golf! There are some amazing courses here, all within a 30 minute drive or less. I love going out to bars and restaurants for happy hour and dinners with my wife and friends, playing Padel and hitting the ocean. I love that every weekend feels like a mini vacation!
